Hoi Polloi: Republic

Conceived and Directed by Alec Duffy
Text by Noah Mease
March 7-22, 2014

Hoi Polloi, the OBIE Award-winning company the New York Times lauded for their "audacity, invention, and talent," takes on the father of western philosophy’s blueprint for a good life: Plato's Republic. Under the direction of Alec Duffy, the piece features design by the team that created Beckett Solos, actors Jess Barbagallo, Lori Parquet and Jason Quarles and text by Noah Mease.

For the piece, Hoi Polloi creates a dream-like theatrical experience that tackles the massive moral questions raised by Socrates, against a shifting backdrop of characters and settings. An intimate audience at JACK joins their symposium, addressing a fundamental human question: Why be good? The result is an adventure that stimulates both the senses and the synapses.
