Join us for the launch of STEWDIO ZERO, the residency of Tony Award winner Stew at JACK. This first installment kicks off a series of new and revived works that Stew will share throughout his time with us. On Friday, October 24, 2025, dive into a rare retrospective with songs from Stew’s shows that have never been performed in New York or have not been heard here in years, alongside brand new works-in-progress and spoken word. The room will be electric. Seats are limited. Bring a friend and be part of the night as it comes to life.

Ris, Tanama, and Caona live in relative peace in the mountains of Jamaica circa 1727 where they steward the land that sugarcane grows on and care for their sick father. Tanama trades sugar and other goods down at the port dreams of a life outside of their land while Caona wants to keep the legacy of their family alive and Ris just wants to keep her sisters safe in a world that is rapidly changing due to colonization. When their land and their bodies become contested as potential ways to win the war against encroaching British invaders these sisters must decide what resistance looks like for free Black women in the face of impossible odds and what they are willing to do, give, and sacrifice for their freedom.

Sugar Vendil’s Antonym: scenes of childhood is an installation that juxtaposes the past, present, and future. scenes of childhood features grown-up versions of Vendil’s childhood hobbies, visual performance scores, video, floating non-adhesive postage stamps, origami stars, dresses by Antonym costume and set designer Harriet Jung. A reminder of the lasting experience of childhood, the installation features grown-up versions of Vendil’s childhood hobbies, visual performance scores, video, floating non-adhesive postage stamps, origami stars, and dresses by Antonym costume and set designer Harriet Jung. Vendil will activate the installation with a performance inspired by her lonely yet hopeful childhood and possibly some embarrassing old poetry, layering electro-acoustic music, voice, and dance rooted in somatic memory.
Optional audience participatory activities include slam books and letter writing.
