Mark Dresser /
Ned Rothenberg duo

Sunday, April 15, 2018 at 7 pm

Mark Dresser - Contrabass
Ned Rothenberg - Alto Saxophone, Bass Clarinet, Clarinet and Shakuhachi

JACK presents a rare opportunity to hear these two master musician/composers together, with their last duo appearance having been at JACK in 2014. Over the past 30 years, each has extended the sonic language of his respective instrument(s) and opened new possibilities of music-making.  They've played and recorded together now for 20 years in many different contexts  -- this concert at JACK is a chance to experience their artistry as a duo in an intimate setting.

TICKETS: $15, cash only at the door

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Composer/Performer Ned Rothenberg, acclaimed for both his solo and ensemble music, has presented his music for the past 30 years in North and South America, Europe and Asia. He performs primarily on the alto saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet, and the shakuhachi – an endblown Japanese bamboo flute. He leads the trio Sync, with Jerome Harris, guitars and Samir Chatterjee, tabla. Recent recordings include Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, Ryu Nashi (new music for shakuhachi), Inner Diaspora, The Lumina Recordings and Ghost Stories, all on Tzadik, as well as Live at Roulette with Evan Parker, Are You Be and The Fell Clutch, on Rothenberg’s Animul label. www.nedrothenberg.com

"Rothenberg reconciles an unapologetically cerebral approach with accessibility and emotional expression. No mean feat, indeed."
- Peter Margarsak, Chicago Reader

"Ned Rothenberg is absolutely phenomenal.. (He has) opened up new and unheard expressive possibilities for wind instruments."
 - Jochen Metzner, Tagespiegel (Berlin)

Mark Dresser (contrabass): His solo works include the DVD/CD/booklet triptych Guts: Bass Explorations, Investigations, and Explanations (2010) and CDs UNVEIL (2006) and Invocation (1994). A chapter on his extended techniques, “A Personal Pedogogy,” appears in the book ARCANA (Granary Press). Dresser has written two articles on extended techniques for The Strad magazine: “Double Bass Harmonics” (October 2008) and an “Introduction to Multiphonics” (October 2009). www.mark-dresser.com

“Calling contrabassist Mark Dresser a virtuoso is like saying Albert Einstein was good at math.” – San Diego City Times.

“Mr. Dresser, a bassist who is one of the great instrumental forces in recent American jazz outside of the mainstream.” –The New York Times
