ABOUT
// Banjela Davis & Das Mannequin have invited three young people involved in the live arts to identify a roster of QTPOC artists whose work speaks to our collective spirit. Each host has been asked to curate a single night of the showcase according to one of three themes,
1) the intersection of activism and the arts,
2) the pervasive influence of house/ballroom culture,
and 3) the rise of queer bodies in hip hop.
Each evening will feature a unique group of rappers, performance artists, dancers, and hopefully some surprises. We hope that this showcase can be a collaborative hub for all participants and observers alike.
We look forward to sharing space with you as we celebrate the Legends, Statements & Stars of our own community at this month's House of Krayola!
BIOS:
Banjela Davis (Zee Frater) is a low-femme pretty sailor from the Upper West Side. She collaborates with artists, business owners, and various community members to spotlight the cultural and political labor of LGBTQ people of color. Her messy, traveling talk show, Legends, Statements & Stars! is currently touring bars, bedrooms and theaters in the tri-state area. Banjela's hobbies include compounding items in Star Ocean, watching balls on Youtube, and loving herself fiercely.
Das Mannequin (Kaimi Glover), co-host of Legends, Statements & Stars!, is a true believer in detail, and indulging in his own unique aesthetic. This Jamaican visual artist is a New York native, and was born and raised in Brooklyn. He attended the High School for International Studies, and graduated from Virginia State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications with a minor in dance. Das Mannequin’s art form extends from the very thing the hood couldn’t claim: his soul. Das Mannequin uses several different mediums to produce art, ranging from digital to paint. He uses these platforms to produce abstract, emotion-based pieces that showcase his love for the black aesthetic, his black pride, and subjects he wishes to bring awareness to. With his deep admiration for New York’s LGBTQ community, and the ballroom scene, he uses his production and media-based knowledge to help erect something the world can’t wait to ride. You can find this warm, eccentric soul posting away on his social media platforms, drawing in NYC’s subways, or brainstorming new ways to make the boys and girls of America gag, with creator and co-host Banjela Davis.
