Damnable Scribbling:
Brooklyn College Playwrights
at JACK

JACK celebrates the Brooklyn College MFA playwriting program (as led by Mac Wellman and Erin Courtney - pictured above) that has spawned so many adventurous writers over the last 15 years, including Young Jean Lee, Thomas Bradshaw, Tina Satter and Annie Baker, among others. We at JACK wanted to know what was going on in there that was producing such wild writing.  This series features a playwriting workshop by Erin Courtney taught in the pedagogical style of the program, a panel discussion with notable alums about their experience in the program, readings of plays by current graduate students, a reading of Mac Wellman's most recent play, Offending Gesture and the centerpiece: world premiere productions by recent alums Eliza Bent, William Burke and Paul Ketchum.

THE HARPER'S PLAY
By Paul Ketchum
Feb 5 – 14

The Harper’s Play is a theatrical adaptation of the February 2014 issue of Harper’s Magazine, cover to cover.  It careens through space and time - from Yahoo message boards to Pussy Riot’s Siberian prison; from the last guillotine execution in France to the Romance Novel Convention in Las Vegas. It will challenge you with the crossword puzzle of your worst nightmares. It will call you a “penis” to your face. It is the only thing that should be done with the February 2014 issue of Harper’s Magazine.

Toilet Time with Eliza Bent

Previously presented as short selections at Dixon Place's Little Theatre, Catch!, and the Great Plains Theatre Conference, Toilet Time with Eliza Bent finally flushes full force at JACK this spring. Bent's lecture/ritual is a tour-de-toots taking on matters of science, philosophy and faith with no shortage of song and sass. The commode, the bidet, and the outhouse get special treatment as well as adventures in digestion. A special guest introduces the evening.
