Connecting professional artists with members of the community in the creation of new performance work
Led by Karma Mayet Johnson
RootSong is a senior center choir residency facilitated by singer and composer Karma Mayet Johnson. Karma’s Rootsong choir experiences involve exploration of roots music of the American South and the African Diaspora as well as vocal exercises that promote skill development and confidence. The participating centers included: St. Louis Senior Center in Crown Heights, Grace Agard Senior Center in Clinton Hill, and the Farragut Senior Center in DUMBO.

RootStory is a storytelling and creative response residency through which multi-genre artist Karma Mayet Johnson and artist scholar Jadele McPherson collaborate with seniors to document and share their expressed truths and life experiences. In 2018, the participating senior centers include: St. Louis Senior Center in Crown Heights and Farragut Senior Center in DUMBO.

This residency consisted of workshops and music sessions, with the two artists collaborating with residents of the Atlantic Terminal public housing complex to explore the original viral medium: song. The artists worked with residents to preserve memories and communicate information while modeling community and leadership, solo and unison, chorus and polyphony.
